Currently about 30000 Irish people immigrate annually to Great Britain, mainly to London. They leave Ireland due to high unemployment rate and no assistance. Most of them have no education and poor perspectives for job in England, so they sign on for social welfare. Bulk of immigrants lives in squats - empty houses across north London, with no electricity and no beds. Because of building boom some Irish get exhausting and dangerous job at private construction sites. They do not pay taxes and are not insured. Loneliness, sense of alienation, and hostility of London make it hard for Irish people to survive. Copyright ©2001 Marcin Wudarczyk |
